Children’s Hospital Los Angeles ‘Once Upon a Time Gala’ Raises $4 Million to Support Pediatric Medical Care and Research | Business Wire

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In recognition for their compassion and dedicated support of Children’s

Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), actress Drew Barrymore,

The Billy and Audrey L. Wilder Foundation and The Los Angeles

Kings hockey team each received the Courage to Care

award at the ‘Once Upon a Time Gala’ on Saturday, October 15, 2016. More

than 1,200 prominent philanthropists, local dignitaries and supporters

gathered at The Event Deck at L.A. LIVE. $4 million in unrestricted

funds was raised, which will support the hospital to fill its most

critical needs including patient care, medical research and families in

need.

“Tonight we celebrate the hope and healthier futures that Children’s

Hospital Los Angeles creates and provides to children across Southern

California and far beyond,” Children’s Hospital Los Angeles president

and CEO Paul S. Viviano told the audience.

Josh Gad, Tony nominee and Grammy Award winner, hosted the event, which

celebrated the ongoing support from the evening’s honorees.

Actress Drew Barrymore’s annual Mother’s Day pampering events, in

conjunction with her company Flower Beauty, have had a lasting positive

impact on CHLA’s patient families. Barrymore’s special guests for the

evening were patient Madison Elizondo and her mother Gina Elizondo, whom

she met at CHLA several years ago.

Barrymore, a mother of two young daughters whom she is trying to parent

by example, said that her work at CHLA is meaningful because it has

touched her on a personal level. “Personal means everything,” said

Barrymore. “Actions speak louder than words. This award – I’m not

worthy. I just need to keep going and try harder so that I can prove to

my daughters that this is a great way of life and the one I want for

them.”

Luc Robitaille, Los Angeles Kings president and NHL Hall of Fame member,

accepted the award on behalf of the hockey team, which is celebrating

its club’s 50th anniversary this season. “Children’s Hospital

Los Angeles is and always will be a place that we will continue to

support and partner with, and it is where we go to be reminded about all

of the important things in life. We love winning Stanley Cups, but we

know happy healthy kids are what really matter.”

The Bill and Audrey L. Wilder Foundation continues the legacy of

legendary film director Billy Wilder and his wife, actress Audrey

Wilder. The couple was committed to children’s causes throughout their

53-year marriage.

“We know that if Billy and Audrey were up here now they would be

overwhelmed by your kindness. They are looking down from heaven and

smiling as their hearts are full of pride for being able to help so many

children at such a fine institution. May their generosity continue

forever,” said Jerry Moss, honoree and trustee for the Wilder Foundation

and CHLA.

The ‘Once Upon a Time’ storybook themed celebration kicked off with

dramatic Cirque-style performances, bringing to life some of the most

famous children’s stories through acrobats and aerialists. After dinner,

which was prepared by Wolfgang Puck, attendees learned of one of the

hospital’s breakthrough medical procedures.

At birth, Caiden

Moran was declared deaf as he had no cochleas, the inner part of the

ear that converts sounds to nerve impulses and sends them to the brain.

His mother, Danielle, learned of a possible solution called an auditory

brainstem implant (ABI), which consists of a microphone and transmitter

surgically implanted on the head. In January 2015, a team of surgeons

including Mark D. Krieger, chief of medical staff and head of the

Division of Neurosurgery at CHLA, performed the ABI procedure on Caiden.

The microphone can convert sounds from the outside world into electrical

signals to an internal receiver comprised of electrodes implanted on the

brainstem that bypass the inner ear and directly stimulate the brain’s

auditory neurons. Caiden, who lives in Hawaii with his family, is part

of a clinical trial and the first ABI study in the U.S. supported by

both the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of

Health – of which Dr. Krieger was co-investigator for CHLA.

“Even though the Morans were in Hawaii, they heard about our own Los

Angeles Auditory Brainstem Implant Team. I had been working with this

incredible multidisciplinary team for almost 10 years. We saw a real

opportunity to help Caiden hear through our revolutionary study,” said

Krieger, the Billy and Audrey Wilder Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery at

CHLA.

Caiden and his mother, Danielle, joined Krieger on stage to an

overwhelmingly warm response. “He’s doing amazingly – we take his

progress day by day. Since the surgery, he’s already hearing and

learning to say quite a lot,” Danielle said, noting that Caiden’s father

Tommy, a U.S. Naval fire tech, was unable to attend the gala as he is

working on a nuclear submarine. “Tommy and I initially wanted Caiden to

be able to hear so that if something dangerous were happening around

him, he would understand and be able to get out of harm’s way, because

that’s what all parents want for their kids, at minimum, right? When we

heard about this study we knew this would be the best possibility for

him. We knew it wouldn’t be overnight but his progress is definitely

picking up. This wouldn’t be possible without you and the amazing ABI

team.”

Katy Perry concluded the evening with a four-song set that included her

hits Roar, Teenage Dream, Dark Horse and Firework,

as well as an emotional rendering of Somewhere Over the Rainbow,

which was inspired by her visit to the CHLA Newborn and Infant Critical

Care Unit last December. Following her performance, young Caiden Moran

presented her with a bouquet of flowers. Perry thanked Caiden by telling

him in sign language, “I love you.”

Attendees included presenters Jessica Capshaw and Eric Stonestreet. They

were joined by Jamie Lee Curtis, Katharine McPhee, Colin Egglesfield,

Tina Knowles, Carlos Gomez, Mark and Julie Steines, Jen Widerstrom,

Holly Robinson Peete, Alex Meneses Simpson, Rebecca Soni, Luc Robitaille

and members of the 1967 and 2016-2017 Los Angeles Kings including Dustin

Brown, Anze Kopitar and Drew Doughty.

The Los Angeles Kings were the gala’s title sponsor. Premier gala

sponsors were Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, Costco Wholesale, Delta

Air Lines, The Goldwin Foundation, and Kristin and Jeffrey Worthe.

Eleven-year-old terminal cancer patient Dustin Meraz, whose legacy was

to encourage others to have the courage to care for children in need,

inspired the biennial event.

Another Tenant-In-Common Acquisition; SCI Real Estate Investments Acquires a $22M Office Complex in the San Fernando Valley with 9 Other Tenant-In-Common Investors.

Business & Real Estate Editors

WEST LOS ANGELES, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 10, 2003

SCI Real Estate Investments is pleased to announce the acquisition of the 130,219-sq.-ft. Jade Corporate Center property located in Mission Hills, Calif., (adjacent to Granada Hills) in the San Fernando Valley. This 94%-occupied, 4-building office complex was purchased for $22,164,450. SCI principals Marc Paul and Robert Robotti represented the buyers, and Lynwood Fields of Madison Partners represented the seller.

SCI is one of the nation’s largest 1031 investment sponsors. SCI acquired the property with 9 other tenant-in-common investors who are completing 1031 exchanges, and with SCI’s private investor group.

Marc Paul, president of SCI, commented: “This is yet another example of the growing 1031 tenant-in-common industry. It is projected that of the approximately $50 billion a year in 1031 exchange transactions, only 2% are represented by tenant-in-common programs. By all accounts, within 5 years, perhaps 10% of these transactions will be TIC deals. That’s $5 billion a year.

“With our background, experience, and this growing marketplace, SCI is perfectly positioned to sponsor these TIC investments. The added benefit we bring is that we can sell 1031 exchangers an undivided, fractionalized ownership position as a tenant-in-common with other investors, placing their funds in a much larger and higher quality project than they could possibly afford on their own.”

About SCI

SCI has been in business since 1994, and has a portfolio valued at $230+ million. SCI corporate offices are located in West Los Angeles, and the company is recognized throughout the real estate, investment, and banking communities as one of the most active, professional, and astute real estate investors in the market today.

Airship Ventures and Farmers Insurance Extend Marketing Relationship | Business Wire

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Building on the success of their current relationship, Farmers®

Insurance and Airship Ventures, have agreed to extend their working

relationship to brand the Zeppelin Eureka as the Farmers Airship.

The agreement not only keeps the Farmers brand on the Zeppelin Eureka,

but also strengthens the role the world’s largest airship will play

as a Farmers Insurance ambassador across the country.

“A lot of people look at our brand on the airship and think ‘floating

billboard,’ but the response we’ve received proves it’s much more than

that,” commented Farmers Chief Marketing Officer, Kevin Kelso. “The

airship generates brand visibility for miles, but the true value of our

relationship lies in people’s affinity for the airship and the

experience of flying. It allows us to connect with the public and

integrate our brand in communities in a way we wouldn’t be able to

otherwise.”

Community support is at the top of Farmers’ priorities when it comes to

the Farmers Airship. The first community airship-centered event under

the new agreement was held in San Diego and supported Farmers’ signature

charity, the March of Dimes. Farmers is the no. two fundraiser

nationwide for the March of Dimes. Farmers will leverage the Zeppelin

experience to raise even more funds in 2010 in support of healthy babies.

A series of flights above San Diego July 14-16 raised over $23,000 for

the March of Dimes. These flights were a precursor to Farmers’ largest

annual single-day March of Dimes fundraising effort, Be a Hero for

Babies Day® , taking place today. Acting as a beacon for the

charitable efforts taking place, the Farmers Airship is sailing above

Farmers’ Home Office in Los Angeles, the hub for nationwide fundraising

efforts.

Since first taking to the skies in January, Farmers has integrated the

Farmers Airship in dozens of events like these, garnering international

media attention for the brand and its causes along the way. On its very

first outing earlier this year, the Farmers Airship exposed the brand to

millions around the globe, providing aerial footage to CBS-TV and acting

as the ultimate skybox for passengers above the Farmers Insurance Open

PGA Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines, Calif.

The Farmers Airship also soared above March for Babies events

across Southern California in April and May, enriching Farmers national

support for March of Dimes. The relationship has also yielded

opportunities to underscore Farmers’ “Ready Feels Good” message. Through

Airship Ventures, Farmers played a role in Operation Golden Guardian,

the State of California’s annual disaster drill, and the Farmers Airship

and the Farmers brand were also prominently featured in a 3-minute

segment on NBC’s Today Show.

“Farmers really gets what the Zeppelin is capable of in terms of

creating meaningful engagements with the public,” stated Airship

Ventures CEO Alexandra Hall. “Our working relationship isn’t just about

showing off a logo, it’s about using the airship as a way to interact

with people and develop valuable relationships. We’re thrilled to

continue our relationship with Farmers and create success for us both in

the coming years.”

About the Farmers Airship and Purchasing Tickets

Stretching 15-feet longer than a 747 and 50-feet longer than the largest

blimp, the Farmers Airship, the Zeppelin Eureka, is the world’s

largest airship. One of only two Zeppelins commercially flying in the

world, the airshipfeatures the largest logo ever used in

Farmers’ history. Larger than most homes, the decal is comprised of 697

sheets of vinyl totaling almost 4,850 square feet and measuring

approximately 185 feet long by 30 feet high on either side of the

Zeppelin. Farmers iconic blue and red shield measures 30 feet high by 50

feet wide, while the 17-foot tall letters spelling out the company name

stretch over 105 feet. The Farmers Airship offers passengers spectacular

360-degree views of the sights on flightseeing tours above Los Angeles,

San Francisco Bay, Silicon Valley, Monterey and San Diego. For more

information about the airship, or to view a detailed flight schedule and

purchase tickets, visit www.farmersairship.com,

USC College of Cinema-Tv – A Review

I attended the undergraduate film software at The University of Southern California and then proceeded with my film education at New York University in which I graduated with a BFA. Throughout my time at USC I attended quite a few courses and labored on various productions of pals that have been in the software. In this small essay I&#39ll attempt and give an overview of what I perspective as the strengths and weaknesses of the software as I see them.

Strengths:

The Locale

The USC College of Cinematic Arts is located on the major campus of the University of Southern California which is located just south of downtown Los Angeles in an spot bordering what is regarded as southwest LA. For those people unfamiliar with Los Angeles and USC, the school is composed of a perfectly preserved and manicured campus that is enclosed as an &#39oasis&#39 from the encompassing areas of east LA which are not approximately as wonderful.

Typically, the west side of Los Angeles is what persons think of when they think of the seashores and nicer suburban areas as perfectly as Hollywood and Beverly Hills which are just east of the ocean communities but west of USC. Though those people living on campus enjoy a wonderful atmosphere, it is generally recognized that venturing as well significantly absent from the major campus is not the very best experience with many if not most college students picking out to go away all through the weekends as the school does have a potent commuter aspect to It.

The Curriculum

The USC Undergraduate Cinema Application is structured in 3 tiers, the 200, three hundred, and 400 amount with each tier of courses escalating in complexity and generally relying on the effective completion of those people levels beneath. Though you have a option between various selections relying on your spot of interest there are some required courses including the &#39core&#39 courses of Cinema 310, generally taken in junior calendar year and Cinema 480, generally taken senior calendar year.

Cinema 310 and 480 are the main production courses of the software in which college students are set into either teams or crews and deliver their more substantial productions. Though Cinema 310 regarded as of non-synced sound and 480 was a more substantial a lot more sync-sound production, items have developed over the a long time. The two courses have a &#39screening&#39 in a kind of pageant at the conclusion of the semester in which college students display their films to each other and loved ones and pals are invited to perspective them. The incredibly very best of these can usually be made use of as portfolio parts to acquire illustration whilst typically they are not of the good quality or length of the graduate amount films.

The services of the school of Cinema / Tv at USC are fantastic. George Lucas, one particular of the school&#39s noteworthy alumni, has built quite a few substantive contributions to the school and recently donated $ a hundred seventy five million to establish a massive expansion of the school. In addition, Steven Spielberg and other people have donated revenue for services. The current school is crafted like a compact studio with doable structures including The George Lucas Instructional Building, The Steven Spielberg Music Scoring Phase and The Marcia Lucas Post-Creation Building.

The Professor

USC has a incredibly good and focused staff members of professors protecting both equally complete-time as perfectly as adjunct school. Most professors have an extensive historical past of operating in the characteristic film and tv industries with various acquiring been nominated for Oscars and Emmys. In the earlier, the school has experienced a quite a few popular school including Irving Thalberg, Alfred Hitchcock, DW Griffith and Darryll Zanuck. Immediately after Graduation USC has a incredibly highly effective and…

Utility Bill Scams Continue to Target Southern California Edison Customers | Business Wire

ROSEMEAD, Calif.–()– (SCE) is advising customers to be aware of a

Kinetic Concepts, Inc. – Financial and Strategic Analysis Review from ReportLinker.com

Imposters have been calling SCE customers telling them they must make

immediate payment on past due bills or have their electric service

disconnected. The callers are also demanding that payment be made

through a prepaid cash card. Other forms of fraud involve customers

being asked to purchase prepaid debit cards. Scammers ask for the debit

card number and collect the value deposited on the card.

SCE customers have reported about 800 instances of phone scams this

year. About 150 residential and commercial customers have been

victimized by some form of bill scam with the incidents costing them an

average of $800 to $1,000.

“We ask our customers to be alert to these calls that demand immediate

payment and threaten service disconnection,” said Marlyn Denter, SCE

manager of consumer affairs. “Customers suspecting a fraudulent call

should ask for the caller’s name, department and business phone number.

If the caller refuses to provide this information, customers should

terminate the call and report the incident immediately to local police

or SCE at 800-655-4555.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey, whose office

prosecutes crimes in about 80 cities within SCE’s service territory,

joins the utility in warning consumers about telephone scams.

“SCE and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office share a

common interest in keeping Los Angeles County residents safe from bill

scams and other financial crimes,” Lacey said.

“A first step to preventing financial scams — particularly among the

elderly and in ethnic communities — is to educate the public,” she said.

“When these crimes do occur, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s

Office is fully committed to prosecuting them to the fullest extent of

the law.”

SCE also reminds customers to ask for identification when a stranger

comes to the door or calls claiming to be a utility worker. SCE utility

workers will provide verification, including their department and phone

number, when asked.

In most cases, home visits by SCE are scheduled by the customer and SCE

will confirm the appointment in writing. If there are any concerns, SCE

and law enforcement officials suggest having the utility worker wait

outside until their identity can be verified.

SCE customers should also note that:

  • An SCE employee will never ask for money in person.

  • Never reveal your credit card, ATM or calling card numbers (or PIN

    numbers) to anyone.

  • If someone calls and requests you leave your residence at a specific

time for a utility-related cause, call the police. This could be a

burglary attempt set up by the caller.

  • Be suspicious of anyone who arrives at your house without an

appointment asking to check an appliance, wiring or suggesting that

there may be some other electrical problem inside or outside your

    residence.

  • For more ways customers can stay safe, please see [/embed]

and read the safety tips section.

The Shoe Crew plans to meet their goals by hosting weekly events this summer. At each event, they will be collecting shoes in exchange for discounted or free entry fees to activities. These fun events are being sponsored by local businesses. Sponsors of The Shoe Crew include Vlado Footwear, Vitaminwater, Goodie Girls Cupcakery, Western Digital, K Spin Designs, Via Trading, The Malibu Country Club, Sky High – Costa Mesa, Racers Edge Indoor Karting- Burbank, and many more. Vlado Footwear is working with the Shoe Crew and will be matching the first one thousand pairs of shoes donated to The Shoe Crew with a new pair of Vlado shoes. “We are so excited to be working with Vlado on this project and their offer to match the first one thousand pairs of shoes donated this summer gives a huge boost to our campaign,” said teen actress, Taylor Hay.

The fun summer of events will begin with a red carpet gala on June 22nd at 6:00 pm at The Malibu Country Club, 901 Encinial Road, Malibu, CA. Attendees’ shoe donations will help get the summer started on the right foot! The Shoe Crew’s official summer calendar will be announced along with introductions of the entire Shoe Crew team, which includes Dylan Riley Snyder of Disney’s Kickin It!

The second Shoe Crew event will be hosted by Sky High Sports 2970 Airway Avenue Costa Mesa, CA 92626 on June 27th from 2pm to 10pm ocy.jumpskyhigh.com. For the entire day, anyone can bring in a pair of shoes in exchange for an hour of free jump time. For each pair of new athletic shoes donated, attendees will receive an hour of jump time. Celebrities will also be present to sign autographs for those who donate shoes!

Many of the underprivileged recipients who will benefit from the Shoe Crew’s efforts are in need of emergency assistance. Some of these youth are from homes that have burned down, have fled domestic violence situations, or whose parents have had to choose between a roof over their heads or food on the table versus the other basic items their children desperately need. The Show Crew is devoted to helping these underprivileged youth who aren’t able to afford necessities that are generally taken for granted, such as shoes.

About A Place Called Home

A Place Called Home is a safe haven in South Central Los Angeles where underserved youth are empowered to take ownership of the quality and direction of their lives through programs in education, arts, and well being; and are inspired to make a meaningful difference in their community and the world.

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth center located in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling and mentoring, music, dance, and art classes. We also have a recreation and athletic department. One on one attention is at the heart of all APCH programs and activities. This reflects the belief that each member arrives at our center with skills and abilities that have not fully been realized. As youth participate in our programs, they discover their interests and talents. APCH strives to help youth achieve a better sense of themselves and the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that they will stay in school and go on to higher education and viable jobs.
