dramatic Cirque-style performances, bringing to life some of the most
famous children’s stories through acrobats and aerialists. After dinner,

hospital’s breakthrough medical procedures.
At birth, Caiden
Moran was declared deaf as he had no cochleas, the inner part of the
ear that converts sounds to nerve impulses and sends them to the brain.
His mother, Danielle, learned of a possible solution called an auditory
brainstem implant (ABI), which consists of a microphone and transmitter
surgically implanted on the head. In January 2015, a team of surgeons
including Mark D. Krieger, chief of medical staff and head of the
Division of Neurosurgery at CHLA, performed the ABI procedure on Caiden.
The microphone can convert sounds from the outside world into electrical
signals to an internal receiver comprised of electrodes implanted on the
brainstem that bypass the inner ear and directly stimulate the brain’s
auditory neurons. Caiden, who lives in Hawaii with his family, is part
of a clinical trial and the first ABI study in the U.S. supported by
both the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of
Health – of which Dr. Krieger was co-investigator for CHLA.
“Even though the Morans were in Hawaii, they heard about our own Los
Angeles Auditory Brainstem Implant Team. I had been working with this
incredible multidisciplinary team for almost 10 years. We saw a real
opportunity to help Caiden hear through our revolutionary study,” said
Krieger, the Billy and Audrey Wilder Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery at
Caiden and his mother, Danielle, joined Krieger on stage to an
overwhelmingly warm response. “He’s doing amazingly – we take his
progress day by day. Since the surgery, he’s already hearing and
learning to say quite a lot,” Danielle said, noting that Caiden’s father
Tommy, a U.S. Naval fire tech, was unable to attend the gala as he is
working on a nuclear submarine. “Tommy and I initially wanted Caiden to
be able to hear so that if something dangerous were happening around
him, he would understand and be able to get out of harm’s way, because
that’s what all parents want for their kids, at minimum, right? When we
heard about this study we knew this would be the best possibility for
him. We knew it wouldn’t be overnight but his progress is definitely
picking up. This wouldn’t be possible without you and the amazing ABI
Katy Perry concluded the evening with a four-song set that included her
hits Roar, Teenage Dream, Dark Horse and Firework,
as well as an emotional rendering of Somewhere Over the Rainbow,
which was inspired by her visit to the CHLA Newborn and Infant Critical

Kids, Teens, and Celebrities Unite in Summer Long Effort to Collect New Shoes for Underprivileged Kids. They Call Themselves “The Shoe Crew”!

Five-Star PR today announced the formation of “The Shoe Crew,” a group of kids, teens, and celebrities determined to help make a difference in the lives of underprivileged youth by providing them with much needed new athletic shoes. The Shoe Crew will be organizing weekly events this summer to collect new athletic shoes which will be donated to two different charities—A Place Called Home and Shoes That Fit. Their goal is to provide new shoes to all of the youth served by A Place Called Home and in addition, they are aiming to fill up the entire warehouse located at the Shoes That Fit corporate office in Claremont, CA. Shoes collected by The Shoe Crew will be donated in time for many of the kids served by these charities to receive a new pair of shoes when they head back to school this fall.
“All kids deserve to have comfortable, nice-looking shoes for school,” said young actor, Gabriel Welch. “We really wanted to do something productive with our time this summer,” said Kayla Tinucci, a junior at Canyon High School and the Captain of The Shoe Crew. Her brother, teen actor, Justin Tinucci, went on to say, “It is so rewarding to do things that positively impact the lives of other people. I am so excited about The Shoe Crew and everything we are doing this summer!”
The Shoe Crew plans to meet their goals by hosting weekly events this summer. At each event, they will be collecting shoes in exchange for discounted or free entry fees to activities. These fun events are being sponsored by local businesses. Sponsors of The Shoe Crew include Vlado Footwear, Vitaminwater, Goodie Girls Cupcakery, Western Digital, K Spin Designs, Via Trading, The Malibu Country Club, Sky High – Costa Mesa, Racers Edge Indoor Karting- Burbank, and many more. Vlado Footwear is working with the Shoe Crew and will be matching the first one thousand pairs of shoes donated to The Shoe Crew with a new pair of Vlado shoes. “We are so excited to be working with Vlado on this project and their offer to match the first one thousand pairs of shoes donated this summer gives a huge boost to our campaign,” said teen actress, Taylor Hay.
The fun summer of events will begin with a red carpet gala on June 22nd at 6:00 pm at The Malibu Country Club, 901 Encinial Road, Malibu, CA. Attendees’ shoe donations will help get the summer started on the right foot! The Shoe Crew’s official summer calendar will be announced along with introductions of the entire Shoe Crew team, which includes Dylan Riley Snyder of Disney’s Kickin It!
The second Shoe Crew event will be hosted by Sky High Sports 2970 Airway Avenue Costa Mesa, CA 92626 on June 27th from 2pm to 10pm ocy.jumpskyhigh.com. For the entire day, anyone can bring in a pair of shoes in exchange for an hour of free jump time. For each pair of new athletic shoes donated, attendees will receive an hour of jump time. Celebrities will also be present to sign autographs for those who donate shoes!
Many of the underprivileged recipients who will benefit from the Shoe Crew’s efforts are in need of emergency assistance. Some of these youth are from homes that have burned down, have fled domestic violence situations, or whose parents have had to choose between a roof over their heads or food on the table versus the other basic items their children desperately need. The Show Crew is devoted to helping these underprivileged youth who aren’t able to afford necessities that are generally taken for granted, such as shoes.
